The City of Houston recently passed the Walkable Places and Transit-Oriented Development Ordinances to improve walking, rolling, safety, and transit access in Houston’s neighborhoods. The initiatives, led by the Planning and Development Department, have been in the works for three years with Third Ward, Near Northside, and Midtown designated as pilot areas.

We at LINK Houston are always advocating for viable, affordable transportation options so that all people can reach opportunity. We are pleased that the City incorporated two of our recommendations: (1) expand the definition of Transit-Oriented Development Streets to extend the benefits of the ordinance to more areas and (2) align the façade transparency requirement with best practices for walkable development and public safety. The new regulations represent a step in the right direction for a more equitable, resilient, vibrant, and prosperous Houston.
