LINK Houston commends Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s leadership in the fight against TxDOT’s North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP). Time and again TxDOT has demonstrated blatant disregard for Houston area residents, businesses, and elected officials by proceeding with the NHHIP despite outstanding serious concerns raised by community members and experts about this project. The legal action by Harris County is a necessary step to force TxDOT to develop a design based on community feedback provided to TxDOT by Mayor Sylvester Turner in May 2020. LINK Houston supports a redesign of the project that will keep people in their homes, preserve jobs, and minimize flooding and air pollution impacts. We want to see a revision of the project’s plans that updates the highway in a way that prioritizes the people who live along the highway, avoids assumptions that wider or faster is better, and works towards a transportation paradigm supported by the Mayor Turner and Judge Hidalgo.
