LINK Houston joined City of Houston Public Works, the Federal Highway Administration, METRO, Houston Police Department, and fellow advocates from BikeHouston for the second round of the Road Safety Audit as part of Mayor Turner’s Safer Streets Initiative. We looked at the remaining six intersections identified as dangerous hotspots in our research and worked with local and federal transportation officials to propose recommendations to make the intersections safer, especially for people walking and biking.
Public Works Deputy Director Jeff Weatherford is scheduled to present updates on the Safer Streets Initiative at Houston City Council’s February 7 Transportation, Technology, and Infrastructure Committee meeting, including the status of the first six intersections involved in the September Road Safety Audit.
We strongly encourage anyone interested in safer streets – pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and drivers – to speak at the February 7 meeting to specifically urge Public Works to share its strategy for addressing the concerns in the two Road Safety Audits and commit to modifications to at least three intersections before June.
