Week Without Driving starts Monday, September 30 and goes until Sunday, October 6, 2024. For many, driving a car is second nature. However, nearly 1/3 of people in the United States—whether due to disability, age, or financial circumstances—rely on walking, rolling, public transit, or asking for rides to navigate daily life. This challenge is designed so those who have the option to drive can learn firsthand about the barriers and challenges that nondrivers face daily, and work with nondrivers to create more accessible communities for all.

How the Challenge Works

  • Every Trip Counts: You can travel however you like, but the challenge is to avoid driving yourself in any car. This applies not just to your work commute but to every trip you make throughout the week.
  • Asking or Paying for Rides: You can ask someone to drive you, or use rideshare services, but keep in mind the time, effort, and costs involved. Reflect on how these options would impact you if they were your only means of transportation.
  • Who Has Choices, What Are Your Choices?: This isn’t a test of how easily you can find alternatives or a disability simulation, but rather a reflection on how different transportation options (or lack thereof) affect nondrivers. Some people have fewer choices, and this challenge offers insight into their daily experiences.
  • It’s Okay to Drive: If you must drive during the challenge, don’t consider it a failure. Instead, reflect on how someone without that option might handle the same situation and what that means for transportation equity.
