Cyclist deaths on the rise in Harris County after grim 2021

Houston wants to be certified as a Gold Level Bike-Friendly City by 2027 but still has more then two-thirds of its bike network to build.

The end of 2021 marked the deadliest year in the last decade for cyclists hit by drivers on roads in Harris County, despite a pointed effort from Houston and its group of partners to make the Bayou City more friendly for those who pedal.

Drivers in Harris County reportedly struck cyclists 557 times in 2021, killing 23 riders. Of those deaths, 11 were within the city of Houston, nine were in unincorporated Harris County and two were in Pasadena. That’s more than the 22 cyclists killed in 2020, or the 20 cyclists killed in 2019, or any number of cyclists killed in a single year since at least 2012, according to an analysis of state crash data and information from police. Over that 10-year span more than 140 cyclists have been killed on roads in Harris County. [Read more.]
